President Donald Trump posted an image on Truth Social on Monday showing a map where the United States covered all of continental North America and Greenland, the latest in a string of provocative posts with imperial undertones as the U.S. continues its trade war with Canada. The image provoked a backlash from critics. Republicans Against Trump wrote on X, ‘He’s f*king insane,’ suggesting a box labeled ‘crazy things Trump did yesterday’ for his posts.
Conservative supporters celebrated the post, which followed weekend messages suggesting the Strait of Hormuz and renaming New Mexico to New America. Trump’s comments sparked reactions from foreign policy scholar Kurt Taylor Gaubatz, who criticized the posts on Bluesky. Commentator Eric Daugherty praised Trump’s ‘full North American empire mode’ and predicted Democrats might file impeachment articles over the post.
The White House has previously renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America and the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Trump’s administration has pursued a maximalist foreign policy, including renaming New Mexico, attacking Iran, deposing Venezuela’s leader, threatening Greenland (a NATO ally), and pressuring Cuba. Canada responded to U.S. trade measures, warning the U.S.-dominated international order is unstable.
Denmark reportedly prepared military plans to defend Greenland. Recent polling shows 46% of people believe Trump’s policies make it harder for conservatives to win in the 2026 midterms, including 30% of Republican voters.
